My surroundings have always been a big influence on what I create. I was brought up on a farm in rural Devon and have a strong love for the environment and the animals, so have always enjoyed depicting this aspect of my life. However, I have recently become interested in looking at the other animals that have also been amongst me growing up, but in a less apparent way; the wild animals. I have become obsessed with tracking these creatures and finding traces of thier presence against the landscape. My current work has led me to look beyond the obvious and rather to portray more of a sense of what these wild animals leave behind.

I like to acquire a strong knowledge of my subject through extensive visual research, as I feel this understanding  then comes across in what I create. The recent addition of film in my explorations has brought about a new side of working to me, but I have recognised this as an interesting element of my background research to be shared.

Drawing is at the core of my practice and I am a keen printmaker, with a particular enjoyment of having a surface to work my drawings into. I am drawn primarily to the etching process, due to the hand-made approach to create a drawing and the delicacy that I am able to acheive because of this. My observational work and photographs aid my printmaking and I enjoy the possibilities of play, such as adding an aquatint to etching plates.

"Daisy Alice Ley’s practise is bound by her combination of research and printmaking. Her extensive investigation allows her work to be immersive and empathetic to her subject matter. The prevailing focus is on wild animals and how she can create work that describes the impressions they leave on a landscape. Ley has started to experiment by collaborating with the animals as mark makers, inviting them in the process and matter of her work. Her curiosities of the natural effects on the landscapes are continually growing; recently including the effects of weather and season change on an animal’s trace."
